As population numbers continue to rise and the climate crisis increasingly impacts on our day to day, we are all having to up our sustainable game in life. The same needs to be applied in death. Here in the UK, when it comes to our final exits we currently have just 2 options: burial or cremation, traditionally with fire.
Resomation provides a sustainable alternative option for how me make our exit. Developed by the brilliant Sandy Sullivan up in Scotland, Resomation, also known as water cremation or alkaline hydrolysis uses a water and alkali solution to speed up the very natural process that happens to the body in burial. Currently not available here in the UK, this seems bananas when such an option exits elsewhere and its sustainable credentials are notable:
Zero mercury or other air born emissions
It uses up to 7 times less energy than fire cremation
The carbon footprint of dispersal is reduced up to 6 times
17 times less impact on the environment than that of fire cremation
What’s not to love?
Our increased social and ethical awareness of the impact of burial and cremation on the environment has seen an increase in natural burial in recent years. This is great news where there is space, alas, this does not assist our urban environments. Our sky lines are rapidly changing as developments keep going up. This may be all very well for the living but how do we exit responsibly!
Could Resomation be the future of farewells socially and environmentally?
Manufactured here in the UK. Sustainable. Gentle on the planet and for many, by the very nature of our human relationship with water, gentler on the mind. We cannot wait to see Resomation as an available option in the not-so-distant future. These things take time but somethings are worth persistent & patient enquiry.
