Following extensive restoration work, we are thrilled to bring this historic gem back into use for the community. Located within one of London’s ‘seven magnificent garden cemeteries, the Grade II listed building designed by William Hosking is the oldest surviving non-denominational chapel in Europe. It really is a magical building. Whilst burials are no longer common in the graveyard the Chapel is a unique and tranquil venue that provides a space for a very private and personal farewell.
The flexible footprint of the Chapel allows for ceremonies, celebrations, wakes and memorials. Restoration works have included the addition of brand-new season inspired stained-glass windows designed by local schools, new seating at mezzanine level, new flooring, toilet facilities and chandelier lighting. The venue is licensed so catering and hospitality can be provided.
Abney Park Cemetery is rich in elaborate monuments and hidden histories. Their dedicated grounds team continue to discover and nurture this rare gem of London’s past communities. A bio-diverse green space is listed as a Grade II Park on Historic England’s register of parks and gardens. As the seasons roll throughout the year the flora, fauna and wildlife thrive in this designated nature reserve. A restorative walk around the grounds pre or post ceremony is highly recommended.
