Funeral Barge for a Hackney Girl

A Floating Funeral, Celebrating freedom in life and death, Thelma was a beloved Hackney girl—strong, independent, liberal, and genuinely vibrant. Known for her party spirit, robust work ethic, and political convictions, her final farewell needed to reflect the freedom and beauty she embodied.

Order of the day

The Funeral Barge: Guests gathered at the Broadway Market lock on the canal for a truly unique barge funeral. Her natural willow coffin rested atop a barge, adorned with flora and fauna to create a floating garden that honored her spirit.

The Ceremony Begins: The ceremony commenced with the solemnly beautiful strains of The Last Post played live on the trumpet, setting the tone for the day. Family and friends, carrying elegantly handcrafted chiffon flags, joined the procession down the Tow Path as Thelma began her unique funeral journey. Over the 30-minute procession, guests walked and talked, reminiscing and recounting memories of their dear friend. The gentle pace of the journey was both calming and humbling, and the elegance of the barge conveyed deep pride and respect. The ceremony was officiated from the Tow Path, with the barge moored alongside a canal-side venue.

An Uplifting Tribute: In a private enclave, the funeral barge was the focal point of the gathering. Guests enjoyed great stories, live music, poems, and heartfelt tributes from family and friends. The fresh air and outdoor setting uplifted spirits as memories and respects were shared. Although the occasion was deeply sad, it was designed to honor, respect, and reflect on Thelma’s life.

A Final Toast: As the canal-side ceremony concluded, guests raised a glass of chilled Champagne. The Last Post sounded once more as the barge ceremoniously moved under the bridge toward its final destination.

Intimate Cremation: An intimate cremation followed with six of her closest family and friends, while other guests continued to enjoy Champagne and canapés, sharing in the celebration until the family returned for further reflections.
