Find out more about the Asylum Chapel by visiting their website.
One of South London’s hidden gems. This shabby chic chapel oozes charm and history from every pore. Arriving through the grand entrance and portico, entering into the space is humbling and awe inspiring. With high ceilings, historic stained glass windows, the light is soft and ambient.
Built in 1827 as the chapel at the heart of London’s largest almshouse complex, known as Licensed Victuallers’ Benevolent Institution Asylum, here the word ‘Asylum’ meant refuge, not institution and believe it or not, served as sanctuary for retired pub landlords in Peckham. Remarkably surviving a WWII bombing with its original stained-glass windows intact, this Grade II listed Georgian chapel has endured nearly two centuries of South London history and remains a deeply atmospheric space for ceremony and reflection.
